John C Reilly to receive Oscar Wilde Award in US

Actor John C Reilly is to be honoured at the US-Ireland Alliance's Oscar Wilde Awards in Los Angeles in February, it has been announced.

The annual awards ceremony is held by the US-Ireland Alliance to celebrate the contribution Ireland makes to film, television, and music. It takes place during the build-up to the Oscars.

Chicago-born Irish American Reilly is the first honouree announced for next year's ceremony, which will be held at the Ebell of Los Angeles on Thursday 27 February. The Academy Awards take place on Sunday 2 March.

The screen veteran's many credits include the films Casualties of War, State of Grace, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The River Wild, Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, The Thin Red Line, Magnolia, Gangs of New York, Chicago, Step Brothers, The Lobster, and Stan & Ollie, and the recent acclaimed series Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.

His upcoming projects include the films A Prayer for the Dying, Testa O Croce, and DreamQuill, and touring his acclaimed one-man vaudeville show, Mister Romantic.

US-Ireland Alliance President Trina Vargo said: "When President Kennedy arrived in Ireland in June 1963, he noted 'that Ireland's sons and daughters are scattered throughout the world' and that they have 'kept a special place in their ancestral memories, of this green and misty island, so in a sense, all of them who visit Ireland come home'. That deep connection with Ireland so clearly applies to John C Reilly, and we look forward to celebrating his impressive career."

Previous recipients of Oscar Wilde Awards include Pierce Brosnan, Richard Baneham, Molly Shannon, Jamie Dornan, Mark Hamill, Jim Sheridan, Chris O'Dowd, Colin Farrell, Caitríona Balfe, Ruth Negga, Sarah Bolger, Lenny Abrahamson, Saoirse Ronan, Brendan Gleeson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Neil Jordan.
