Behind the music - The Púcas

New Galway duo The Púcas have released their charity single Christmas in Galway, with all proceeds from the track will be going to the Galway Hospice. We asked the band the BIG questions . . .

The Púcas are Adam from Waterford and Fergal from Galway, and their music pays homage to their love of traditional Irish music, fusing Irish instrumentation with a contemporary pop sound.

Galway Hospice looks after over 1,000 patients and their families every year, at home and in the hospice in Renmore.

This care includes inpatient care, day care, care in homes and in the community, medical social work and bereavement support. All funds raised by the local community help enhance care for patients and their families.

You can support your local hospice by heading over to the Together for Hospice website.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Well, we both have backgrounds in theatre, we never intended to set up the group, it was just a happy accident, and we are both in our thirties. Adam has a few years on me but I'll say no more.

How would you describe your music?

We both share a love of trad so you'll always find a nod to that somewhere. It's a bit of a fusion of the old with a fresh contemporary pop sound and maybe a bit of musical theatre thrown in for good measure.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Collectively it's a real mixed bag. At any moment you could find Adam belting out a bit of Sondheim or Les Mis and Billy Joel is a big one for me but when it comes to Taylor, we don't see eye to eye.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

The first gig we ever went to together was Jessie J at the O2 in Shepard's Bush in London but more recently we watched Lyra and Declan O’Rourke.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Fergal: Back to Bedlam by James Blunt.

Adam: First CD I'm pretty sure was Talk on Corners by The Corrs.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Fergal: Pink Pony Club is still getting a lot of play.

Adam: Glasgow/No Place Like Home sung by Jessie Buckley from the movie Wild Rose but Ireland by Megan O’Neill is a strong contender for both of us.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Adam: "I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me."

Fergal: "He’s just a poor boy from a poor family."

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Fergal: It’s gotta be Christmas in Galway at Christmas time but the rest of the year, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Adam: Proud Mary sung by Tina Turner - what a song and what an Icon!
