A prolific artist across multiple disciplines, Aonair writes, produces, records, and mixes most of his work. Over the past year, he's been working on his second EP, Think I’m On A Comedown, which was written and recorded between New York, Donegal, and Dublin and released early next year.
Aonair plays The Grand Social, Dublin on 18 December and RCC, Letterkenny on 20 December.
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
How would you describe your music?
Lyrical synth pop with an 80s edge. Bold sweeping melodies, huge guitar solos, and immersive, maximalist production.
Who are your musical inspirations?
I'm really heavily inspired by some great 80s bands such as The Blue Nile, Prefab Sprout, Roxy Music and Prince. But also, modern artists like The 1975, who have super clean pop production. In my music I try to combine the old and the new through my own lyrical writing style.

What was the first gig you ever went to?
The Swell Season in An Grianan Theatre in Letterkenny. I was a BIG folk fan when I was younger, that style of lyric focused writing definitely still influences my creative process now.
What was the first record you ever bought?
I'm going to say my first ever vinyl record and that was Closing Time by Tom Waits, which is a classic.
What’s your favourite song right now?
I've strangely been on a BIG Michael McDonald binge of late and I cannot stop listening to What A Fool Believes by the Doobie Brothers. New music that I'm loving right now is Candy by mk.gee.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Good company and grief, sit like a doc leaf sits beside a stinging nettle" - Fionn Regan.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
The Downtown Lights - The Blue Nile. It's a timeless classic, heartbreaking, uplifting and always makes me feel something new.
Where can people find your music/more information?
I'm on all streaming services or you can find me online. Instagram and Facebook - @aonair.band.
