Nív, who hails from Kildare and is now based in Dublin, is currently studying songwriting at BIMM and has performed at festivals such as Brigid 2025, Vantastival and Electric Picnic and venues like The Sugar Club and Whelan's.

In 2022, she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and spent the year working, travelling and using her music to spread Irish culture in North Carolina and across the United States.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I’m a singer songwriter from Maynooth, Kildare. I was awarded the Dermot Kennedy BIMM Music scholarship last year and have since been working on and releasing my debut EP with the first single from it, God Knows, is out now! I play the piano and am trained in musical theatre singing.

How would you describe your music?

My music is definitely quite folky. I write in the genre of folk ballads a lot of the time and there’s definitely some influence from Irish traditional music in my songs; I grew up surrounded by Irish music, my Dad is a trad player and so we’d often attend trad sessions to hear him growing up.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I think I definitely take inspiration from Joni Mitchell. I just love that her songs are fully focused on the lyrics and storytelling. I also think Damien Rice, The Cranberries and The Corrs have had an influence on my music.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

The first gig I ever went to was Damien Rice in Whelan’s in 2002 when I was about seven with my family. Damien Rice actually went to the school my parents were teaching in so they brought us to see him. I remember my favourite song from that show was Amie and I still love that song today.

What was the first record you ever bought?

The first record I ever bought with my own money was Birdie’s Fire Within. I was obsessed with her in my teenage years. She’s definitely influenced my music too I would say!

What’s your favourite song right now?

My favourite song at the moment is Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) by Billy Joel. It’s a song I randomly heard on my Spotify Discover Weekly and it stopped me in my tracks. It’s a very beautiful and nostalgic piece he wrote for his daughter. I’ve had it on repeat for the last two weeks. Definitely go listen it’s great! He’s great!

Favourite lyric of all time?

I could quote the whole of Case of You by Joni Mitchell but if I had to choose a line from that song it would be "Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine, You taste so bitter and so sweet, Oh, I could drink a case of you darling."

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Creggan White Hare - Daoirí Farrell.
