Oscar winner Zoe Saldaña described herself as "a proud child of immigrant parents" as she accepted her Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Saldaña, the favourite in the category for her performance in the musical crime movie Emilia Pérez, became emotional as she shouted out "mommy", saying her "whole family is here".
"Everything brave, outrageous, and good in my life was because of you," she continued.
"My grandmother came to this country in 1961, I am a proud child of immigrant parents," she told the audience.
Saldaña added she was the first actress of Dominican heritage to win the prize and said her grandmother would be "proud" of her singing and acting in Spanish.
She was named the winner in the category over Ariana Grande (Wicked), Felicity Jones (The Brutalist), Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), and Isabella Rossellini (Conclave).
