UK indie pop artist Cortney Dixon has released new single, You Look Good Naked, and plays at the SXSW showcase announcement. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Cortney is an artist, producer, songwriter and guitarist from the coastal town of South Shields in the North of England.

She has supported Johnny Marr, Republica and #FendersUnplugged in support of Sam Fender's homecoming show at St James Park in London.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I am addicted to shoes and have over 100 pairs. I have ones that even play music and flash. I have lived on the same street in South Shields my whole life and named my EP after the flat I grew up in and still live in now. When I was bored in lockdown, I trained to become an aromatherpist and started giving out free massage tokens to friends instead of buying them presents. I massaged two people and have never done it since.

How would you describe your music?

I've recently been describing it as fuzzy indie/fizzy pop meets moments of garage rock. It has pop glamour with big organic beats and lots of gritty indie guitars. I’m obsessed with my fuzz pedal at the moment. I don’t do sad songs very well, so even if the lyrics are addressing a sad topic, I like to dress it up with big upbeat instrumentation. I want everything I produce in the studio to translate into a fun live show!

Who are your musical inspirations?

OMG so many. My all time faves are Kate Bush, St Vincent, David Bowie, The Clash, Blondie and PJ Harvey.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

This is slightly embarrassing, but I think my dad took me and my sister to see Busted when we were still in primary school. I remember that because we slept in for school the next day and I felt so rock ’n’ roll showing up late because I was 'at a gig last night’. The first gig I remember really clearly, which sparked my love for punk, was going to see Stiff Little Fingers (again with my Dad) when I was 12.

What was the first record you ever bought?

I think it was Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette.

What’s your favourite song right now?

My new obsessed is Amyl and The Sniffers and I can’t get enough of their song U Should Not Be Doing That.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Bon Iver: "I’d be happy as hell if you stay for tea". Being a Northern lass, if I fancied someone when I was younger, I used to be like ‘do you want to come to my house for tea’, meaning to eat dinner with me and my family. Every time I hear it, it brings back loads of lush, juvenile memories and reminds me of a simpler time.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Cloudbusting by Kate Bush!
