Bristol instrumental-rock trio Last Hyena have released their new single, Make It Sound French. We asked them the BIG questions . . .
The track follows the band's 2021's debut album, How Soon is Mars?, and was recorded, mixed and mastered with Mark Roberts (Delta Sleep, Black Peaks, Poly-Math, Jamie Lenman) at Devon's Middle Farm Studios.

Speaking about the song, Last Hyena say, "The title comes from a story shared by a close friend whose father was in a punk band in his younger years. During one of their shows, the band decided to play an impromptu cover of Ça Plane Pour Moi by Plastic Bertrand.
"When the lead singer, our friend's father, told his bandmates he didn't know the lyrics, one of them responded with `just make it sound French!’.
"This spontaneous moment stuck with us because it perfectly embodies the themes we wanted to explore in the track: the idea of adapting to the unexpected, leaning into the chaos and finding a way to make something work even when things aren't perfect.
"The title captures that spirit of improvisation and fluidity, much like the journey the music itself takes listeners on. We're thrilled to share this journey with our listeners, and we hope it resonates with anyone who's ever had to find peace in the midst of turmoil."
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
Rory: My middle names are "Thurstan Parmenter". I failed my driving test three times, due to other cars crashing into me. I have tattoos of Max and Josh’s names, one on each arm.
How would you describe your music?
Max: Probably somewhere between organised chaos and tuneful dissonance.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Josh: I’m a guitarist’s guitarist at heart; I’m honestly inspired more by melody and harmony than time signatures. So, artists like John Mayer, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Ariel Posen, Microwave and Durry are always at the top of my playlists.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Rory: The first gig I ever went to was Enter Shikari at Camden Underworld. I was 16 at the time - me and my friends all had fake IDs so we bought (and finished) a crate of Red Stripe before the show, which was an absolute sweat box.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Max: St. Anger by Metallica on CD, I was around 14 years old on a school trip in Belgium and the artwork caught my eye. I still think it's a solid album and I'll die on that hill.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Josh: Taste by Sabrina Carpenter. The guitar parts for this track are actually great!
Favourite lyric of all time?
Rory: "It could be worse we could be dead, I don’t know how we survived but all I know is we did" - from The Blakfish Song by Ringo Starr - the second best drummer in the Beatles".
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Max: He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot by Grandaddy - a nine-minute space-drenched epic that speaks to the soul.
