Inspired by a childhood memoir written by his late father, it deals with "the timeless themes of love, loss, loneliness and the immutable pull of home".
Tell us three things about yourself . .
I love pesto, the sound of waves smashing on a beach, and once upon a time, I chased a trio of Manta Rays across the Indian Ocean . . . I nearly died.
How would you describe your music?
Coragh County Leitrim 1928 draws on the folk tradition and sprinkles in some more contemporary vibes…otherwise I could just as easily morph from blues to classical and anything in between! Was "eclectic" the short answer?
Who are your musical inspirations?
Elvis (both of them!), Buddy Rich, Rob Strong, Jimmy Faulkner, Tom Waits, Bill Withers, Randy Newman, Chet Baker, Aretha Franklin, Moving Hearts, Paul Brady, Horace Silver, J Dilla, Richard Spaven, Steve Cooney, The Clancy Brothers, Questlove, all the current crop of Irish writers……we have such a deep well of talent!
What was the first gig you ever went to?
I think a singer named John McNally, a kind of Irish Elvis in the Glen Eagle Killarney, I was 8 or 9. My first own choice gig was Rob Strong in the Baggot Inn….I was seriously underage!
What was the first record you ever bought?
The Elvis 40 Greatest double album….the man in Murray's Record Store put on track one - My Baby Left Me and I was lifted out of my neat and ordered 10-year-old life forever!
What’s your favourite song right now?
Probably changes by the hour….I’m going to say Heaven by Nas but blink and I’ll say Veronica by Elvis Costello.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Like a bird on a wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir, I have tried in my way to be free" - Leonard Cohen.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Louisiana 1927 sung by Aaron Neville (or With God on Our Side).
