If you haven't had enough politics for one week(end), then here's Cate Blanchett as the German Chancellor, hosting the rest of the G7.
The G7 leaders have gathered to work on a joint statement about a global crisis. The eyes of the world are on them and they've other things on their minds, including making eyes across the table.
After their al fresco dinner, the gang break into groups to hammer out bits of the statement, but it's not long before strange things start happening. Soon, the seven are lost in the woods - and so is the film.
As with any great actor, one of the joys of Blanchett's career is that you never know where she's going to pitch up next. Rumours, however, is a head-scratching misstep, a political satire come comedy-horror that goes on for too long and thinks it has more to say than it actually does. What's the point here? That some of the most powerful people in the world make it up as they go along? Sure, we're all living that!
Amidst the notions, spoofing, and self-interest, there are a couple of laughs, but if you want something about shape-throwing and the corridors of power that will keep you hooked from start to finish, try the Robert Redford-starring The Candidate or Joan Allen, Jeff Bridges, and Gary Oldman in The Contender. Granted, they're different films from the out-there Rumours; they also figure higher on any ballot paper.
