We're rounded up a selection of the best films that are available to stream this Christmas for young and old alike, featuring some perennial holiday classics as well as some non-traditional options.
Take a look at our top 20 Christmas movies on streaming below...
Home Alone - Disney+
Could this be the Christmas movie to end all Christmas movies? Macauley Culkin stars as Kevin McCallister, a quick-thinking kid who gets left alone during the festive season when his family fly off on holidays without him. This one never gets old.
Frozen - Disney+
Yes, the songs might drive you insane, but the kids love this Disney animation which tells the story of a fearless princess who sets off on an epic journey to find her estranged sister. Altogether now - "Let it gooooo.....".
Buttons: A Christmas Tale - RTÉ Player
Angela Lansbury, Kate Winslet and Dick Van Dyke star in this children's fantasy that tells the story of an orphan who receives a visit from a guardian angel, who comforts her with the story of another child's search for a family.
Elf - Now TV
One of the funniest Christmas movies going with some of the most quotable lines to boot. ("SANTA! Oh my God! Santa, here?! I know him! I know him!") Will Ferrell is side-spittingly funny as the eponymous elf, who leaves the North Pole for New York to be reunited with his father, played with panache by James Caan.
Inside Out - Disney+
This glorious, life-affirming Disney-Pixar creation is a spectacular watch. There have always been relationship lessons and real world wisdom nuggets galore for grown-ups in Pixar movies, but Up! director Pete Docter and his team have outdone themselves with Inside Out. There's so much going on here that one watch now won't be enough.
Mrs Doubtfire - Disney+
This is a gem of a family film. Robin Williams plays an actor who disguises himself as a female housekeeper to spend time with his children held in custody by his former wife. Pierce Brosnan is delightful as the ex-wife's new boyfriend.
The Sound of Music - Disney+
Robert Wise's classic musical, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, won five Oscars including Best Picture in 1966. The fact-based film is based on The Story of the Trapp Family Singers published in 1949 by the real Maria Von Trapp. As enjoyable today as the day it was released. The music, drama, cinematography and performances combine to make this a great family film.
Fantastic Mr Fox - Disney+
Wes Anderson's first animated film is perfect fare for adults and kids alike, which makes it the most excellent Christmas viewing. It has an all-star voice cast, including George Clooney as the titular character, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson and Michael Gambon. Just delightful.
Muppets Most Wanted - Disney+
For genuinely laugh-out-loud moments and tonnes of feel-good factor, Muppets Most Wanted is your only man. The musical comedy features a hilarious performance by Ricky Gervais as baddie Dominic Badguy (see what they did there?!) who scams the muppets into taking part in a heist while they are touring in Europe.
Toy Story - Disney+
You'd be hard-pressed to find better family entertainment than Toy Story. We're now four movies into the franchise with a fifth due in 2026, but the 1995 original is still the best.
Peter Rabbit - Netflix
Crowd-pleasing family comedy Peter Rabbit whizzes by and if you know anyone under the age of seven, they're going to lap this up. It's pretty good fare for the over-sevens too, but only if you watch with an open heart and let Domhnall Gleeson and Rose Byrne's double act charm you into submission.
The Greatest Showman - Disney+
The Greatest Showman is pure entertainment and just the film we need right now in this crazy world. Hugh Jackman stars as PT Barnum, an ambitious chap not afraid to embellish, who goes from the proverbial rags to riches, basically inventing show business along the way.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - Prime Video
This is a film of utter brilliance and hilarity. Steve Martin puts in a stupendous performance alongside the very suave Michael Caine playing two con artists competing to swindle an American heiress out of her fortune. It's as gorgeous to look at as it is entertaining to watch.
Die Hard - Disney+
Is Die Hard the most Christmassy non-Christmas movie of all time? This 1988 action movie stars Bruce Willis as a New York cop battling armed men who have taken over a Los Angeles skyscraper where his wife is working on Christmas Eve. Combining edge-of-your-seat action with a razor-sharp script, Die Hard is one of those films that bears repeat viewings and still stands up to this day.
Scrooged - Prime Video
Bill Murray's take on A Christmas Carol is a highly entertaining modernisation of the Dickens' classic. Murray plays a selfish, cynical television executive who is haunted by three spirits bearing lessons on Christmas Eve.
Office Christmas Party - Now TV
There is a bit of festive F-bomb cheer to be had in the company of Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman and the gang here. Aniston is in great form here as the heads-will-roll CEO and and Bateman portrays the good guy to trademark standard. If you enjoy watching grown-ups behaving very badly, this is the movie for you.
Avengers: Infinity War, Disney+
This was a jaw-dropping game-changer in the world of Marvel when it was released in 2018 and is still a standout for those feeling a little bit (or even a lot) jaded with the seemingly endless supply of superhero movies. Without giving too much away, Avengers: Infinity War basically takes The Empire Strikes Back model and chucks it out the window. This is pretty much as dark as Marvel gets.
Planes Trains & Automobiles - Prime Video
This slapstick '80s road comedy features the dream comedy duo of Steve Martin and the late, great John Candy. They share a three-day odyssey of misadventures trying to get home to Chicago in time for Thanksgiving.
Love Actually - Now TV
Simply the best of its kind, Love Actually is a shameless tear-jerking, clichéd dramedy with more celeb cameos than the Oscars. The film offers a sleigh-load of festive feel-good factors and a poptastic sing-a-long too.
Les Misérables - Prime Video
Even if you are a stringent musical hater and wouldn't watch a song-filled film for all the tea in China, you need to put aside everything you know or believe about musicals, because Les Misérables is different. It is an epic blockbuster that grabs your heart, pulls it out of your chest and dangles it on its strings right from its breathtaking opening scene, and holds onto it, beating and pulsating, until the very last note is sung.
Last Christmas - Netflix
Directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) and co-written by first-timer Bryony Kimmings and Emma Thompson, Last Christmas stars Emilia Clarke as Kate, a young woman continuously unlucky in life, who accepts a job in a London department store as an elf during the run-up to Christmas. When Kate meets Tom (Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding) while at work, her life takes a turn - and hopefully it's a turn for the better.
