Blue Road - The Edna O'Brien Story will open in Irish cinemas on Friday 31 January, and the trailer for the award-winning documentary has just been released.
Directed by Sinéad O'Shea (Pray for Our Sinners, A Mother Brings Her Son to Be Shot) and narrated by Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley, Blue Road - The Edna O'Brien Story is described as "a candid portrait of one of the world's greatest and most charismatic writers".
"Her books were banned and burned in her native Ireland," the synopsis continues.
"In London and New York, she had illicit love affairs, hosted star-studded parties, and made and lost a fortune.
"In her final year, aged 93, she shares her diaries and gives one last interview to filmmaker Sinéad O'Shea about her extraordinary life.
"Her diaries are read aloud by Oscar-nominated actress Jessie Buckley."
Co Clare-born Edna O'Brien died in July 2024 in London.
Blue Road - The Edna O'Brien Story won Best New Irish Feature and the Audience Award at the recent Cork International Film Festival.
It received its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and was the opening night film of the DOC NYC Festival in New York City earlier this month.
"I am so fortunate to have worked with Edna O'Brien on this in her final year," said director O'Shea.
"Edna was full of talent, pain, fun, glamour, and contradictions, and ultimately, I believe she had one of the most extraordinary lives of any Irish person.
"I'm really looking forward to audiences getting to see her incredible life story on the big screen this January."
Blue Road - The Edna O'Brien Story is an SOS Production in co-production with Tara Films, with backing from Fís Eireann/Screen Ireland, Sky, and the UK Global Screen Fund.
It is produced by Claire McCabe, Eleanor Emptage, and Sinéad O'Shea with Katie Holly and Barbara Broccoli serving as executive producers.
