Sparks fly between Renee Zellweger and Leo Woodall in Bridget Jones trailer

Sparks fly between Renee Zellweger and One Day star Leo Woodall in the first trailer for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, the fourth instalment in the romantic comedy franchise.

Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson reprise their roles as rapscallion Daniel Cleaver and despairing gynecologist Dr Rawlings respectively, while Woodall, also known for The White Lotus, and Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) have joined the cast.

Warning: Spoiler alert!

The trailer reveals that Zellweger's titular character is dealing with the tragedy of losing her partner Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) while raising her two young children, 9-year-old Billy and 4-year-old Mabel, alone.

However, our rom-com heroine has not given up on love and the trailer tees up two possible romances for Bridget.

There's the age-appropriate Mr. Wallaker (Ejiofor), a handsome teacher at her children's school, and the charming, but much younger, Roxster (Woodall).

A scene from the trailer shows Bridget and Roxster seemingly on a date.

"How old are you?" she asks him.

"28. No I'm just kidding. 29." he replies, before she laughs and takes a large swig of white wine.

The trailer shows Grant's Daniel trying to talk Bridget into pursuing a romantic connection.

"You are effectively a nun. A very, very naughty nun," he tells her.

The clip also shows Bridget's friends try to set her up on Tinder as she attempts to forge a new path forwards in life and love.

A synopsis from the movie reads: "Bridget goes back to work and even tries out the dating apps, where she's soon pursued by a dreamy and enthusiastic younger man.

"Now juggling work, home and romance, Bridget grapples with the judgment of the perfect mums at school, worries about Billy as he struggles with the absence of his father, and engages in a series of awkward interactions with her son’s rational-to-a-fault science teacher."

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is directed by Michael Morris (To Leslie, Better Call Saul), from a screenplay by Helen Fielding, based on her novel, with contributions from Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady, Eric) and Dan Mazer (I Give it A Year, Bridget Jones's Baby).

It is the fourth film in the ever-popular franchise and follows Bridget Jones's Diary (2001), Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) and Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016).

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is due to be released on Valentine's Day, 14 February, 2025.
