Behind the music - MT.Heads

Irish Band MT. Heads have released their new single, Feel Alright. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

The band say the new track touches on "the frustration and heartache of a one-sided relationship".

"It's about the frustration of a person not being who you thought they were. Someone who is untrustworthy, but you still find yourself enamoured by them."

The band's debut EP, Windows Turned to Walls, is due out later this year, following previous releases Dirty Emeralds and Nothing More.

Won the 2023 UCD Battle of the Bands and have performed at festivals like Sea Sessions and Dublin venues like Whelan’s and the Workman’s Club.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

We bonded on the first day of junior infants playing lightsabres in the yard during break. We’re both very forgetful for different reasons and we fell out of contact for years but reunited in a PlayStation party on a game of rocket league in 2015.

How would you describe your music?

It would best be described as alt pop/indie rock. It’s really a blend of genres. Our music is for fans of Dominic Fike, Hard Life, and The Strokes, but we sound uniquely ourselves at the same time.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Sam: One of our main musical inspirations are Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun of Twenty One Pilots, the amount of care and effort they put into their craft is inspiring. Their songs are an unlimited blend of genres wrapped together by hopeful yet raw and honest lyrics. How they carry themselves shows how much they love what they do. They build the most euphoric live shows I have ever seen and it inspires me to break from the mould of just standing on the stage playing your music. What they can do on and off the stage with just two people is incredible.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

John: My first concert was Twenty One Pilots when they played their world tour for their album, Trench, in the 3Arena. I actually went with Sam and to be honest I still haven’t been to a concert as good since. Not only is Trench one of Sam and my favourite albums of all time but the show that Josh and Tyler put on both sonically and visually will always be a core memory for me and something that I think Sam and I will always strive to achieve someday.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Sam: I was about seven and I had to pick between Curtain Call by Eminem and Lines, Vines and Trying Times by the Jonas Brothers, I went for the latter. It’s a funny story but I’m happy I went for that record.

What’s your favourite song right now?

John: Probably Jigsaw Falling Into Place by Radiohead. I’ve loved it for years (another one of my Dad’s favourite bands I became hooked on). Radiohead is another big inspiration for me and probably the band I’d most like to see live if (hopefully when) they tour again. Every time I hear that acoustic guitar line introducing the song, I can never skip it, it never gets old. I feel like that whole album In Rainbows is definitely my favourite of their albums and Jigsaw Falling Into Place is my favourite track.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Sam: "And I will say that we should take a moment and hold it. And Keep it frozen and know that life has a hopeful undertone" Migraine by Twenty One Pilots.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

John: It would probably be Machu Picchu by The Strokes from their album Angles. My Dad was always a huge Strokes fan while I was growing up and I remember him playing the Angles CD over and over in the car as a child. For a while I forgot about the song only to rediscover it a few years ago and it’s been one of my favourite songs ever since. I love everything about it from the lyrics to the melodies to the drums, as well as it having a huge nostalgia factor for me. I don’t think it’ll ever get old, it’s just pretty timeless.
