Kneecap leads British Independent Film Awards nominations

Award-winning Irish-language film Kneecap has scored the most nominations for the 2024 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), with an impressive fourteen nods.

Writer-director Rich Peppiatt's critically acclaimed movie, which stars the Belfast rap trio of the same name and tells their "riotous and ground-breaking" origin story, is up for Best Director, Best Screenplay, The Douglas Hickox Award (Best Debut Director) and Best Debut Screenwriter for Peppiatt.

The Kneecap trio Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, JJ Ó Dochartaigh are nominated for Best Joint Lead Performance.

The film is also nominated for Best British Independent Film plus eight craft categories: Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Editing, Best Music Supervision, Best Original Music, Best Production Design and Best Sound.

The comedy has already taken honours at the Sundance Film Festival in the US and the Galway Film Fleadh. It has also been chosen as the Irish entry for the International Feature Film category at next year's Academy Awards, following in the footsteps of An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl).

Speaking about the nominations, Kneecap producer Trevor Birney (Fine Point Films) said: "For Kneecap to be recognised at this level is testament not only to Rich Peppiatt’s creative vision and determination but also to the work of an amazing cast and crew along with the unstinting support of our financiers."

Kneecap includes Belfast's Fine Point Films, Dublin's Wildcard Distribution, London's Mother Tongues Films and the British Film Institute (BFI) among its producers.

Among the organisations that funded the film are: Northern Ireland Screen, the Irish Language Broadcast Fund, Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán and TG4.

The Outrun, starring Saoirse Ronan, collected nine nominations, including a Best Lead Performance for the BIFA veteran, who won Best Actress in 2015 for her role in Brooklyn.

Based on Amy Liptrot's best-selling novel of self-discovery and sobriety in the wilds of Orkney, the movie is also up for Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Make-Up and Hair Design, Best Sound and Best Original Music.

Irish actor Barry Keoghan has received a Best Supporting Performance nomination for his role in Andrea Arnold's fifth feature, Bird, alongside his co-star Franz Rogowski.

The movie, which has been described as a "coming of age fairytale" has picked up seven nominations in total, including Best Director, Breakthrough Performance for newcomer Nykiya Adams, Best Casting, Best Editing and Best Original Music.

Director Rose Glass' electric new love story, Love Lies Bleeding, has been nominated for twelve awards.

On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, the new film from director Rungano Nyoni, which was filmed in Zambia with post-production taking place in Ireland, and Unicorns about a single father and mechanic who is forced to question his sexual identity, are both nominated for seven awards.

The winners will be announced at the British Independent Film Awards ceremony on Sunday, 8 December.
