Speaking about the track, Matthew says, "With a post-punk ethos in mind, we wanted this song to feel like every pay-off was another massive climb. The chorus is almost an anti-chorus, it's angular and grinding.
"This song is a nauseating comparison to having an out of body experience watching yourself on a never-ending loop, feeling hopeless and sick. So self-deprecating and always pushing that self-destruct button."
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
A Dublin-born council estate kid making art and music working class. I've been very fortunate to have an education and now livelihood entrenched in art and being creative. Mostly funded by government handouts due to the level of poverty in my family. Oh… and I love cats.
How would you describe your music?
Our music is sonically abrasive and we always wanted to lean into the extreme side of that to create tension. It borrows a lot from more Industrial sounding bands, like Nine Inch Nails and so on. The counterpoint carrying you through it all is the soft vocals and pop song structures. I guess the tensions of chaos and beauty is something that we always wanted to have in the sound, the juxtaposition is important. My Bloody Valentine is a perfect example of a band that did it so well with their sound. We have tried to categorize our sound with many labels over the years and we have settled with industrial noise pop.
Who are your musical inspirations?
It definitely started with Bowie and then mixed heavily with Trent Reznor. Believe it or not, Lady Gaga had a massive role to play in us realising our vision of what we wanted to try to achieve with Tayne. But I think currently I pull so many influences from electronic producers and current pop music - Clark and Charlie XCX.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
At a guess, James Brown - The Rose of Tralee Festival, Kerry, 1999.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Nothing good. I think I remember buying Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water by Limp Bizkit and being very underwhelmed.
What’s your favourite song right now?
I’m not sure about the newest album yet, but definitely Fontaines D.C.'s recent single Starburster had me really, really excited and has been a heavy rotation.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Since you’ve been gone I can breathe for the first time."
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Damn. Probably something really sombre - Plainsong, the opening track from The Cure's epic Disintegration or La Mer by Nine Inch Nails is a bit more hopeful.
