Behind the music - Kathy Long

Kilkenny alt-pop artist Kathy Long has released her new single, Glow Gold. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Speaking about the song, she says. ''Glow Gold is a song filled with love, grief, nostalgia, hope, and connecting to our inner voice, to something bigger than us.

"I wrote this song after losing a parent, and something I've learnt with grief is that regardless of what life throws at you, to carry on as your true self is to shine in a world that needs the light."

Kathy has played Electric Picnic and supported Mundy and The 4 of Us, and recently collaborated on the single Hiding with Dublin spoken word artist, Caoimhe Weakliam, which was released last summer.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I’m from the lovely County Kilkenny. I love playing live. I’m really inspired by nature and have always felt connected to it, especially around where I grew up and I think it feeds into so much of what I do and who I am.

How would you describe your music?

I would describe my music as quite deep lyrically but I think there’s also a lot of hope in my music. When I was young, I found it really hard to express myself through talking, so since I was about 13, I just naturally leaned to songwriting to understand something that was going on in my life or what I was feeling. As I got older and got more serious about making music, it just feels really right within to share and connect with people because we all feel the same emotions and that’s literally all I write about. It has also been such a journey finding a sound that I love and that feels like me and releasing Glow Gold feels like a big, exciting step for me and where I’m going with music.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I’m inspired by so many artists but Bon Ivor and Aurora will always be my number ones.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Westlife at the 3Arena. I was around 12 and my friend was a massive fan, I remember being so in awe but my highlight was buying one of those light spinner toys they sell at concerts.

What was the first record you ever bought?

I genuinely can’t remember the first record I bought with my own money but my guess would be one of Taylor Swift’s first albums.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Best Day Of My Life by Tom Odell.

Favourite lyric of all time?

This is such a hard one to answer but one of the first lyrics that came into my head is by Ben Howard - "Depth over distance every time".

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Sleeping At Last by Saturn.
