Coronation Street's Gail Rodwell, played by Helen Worth, suffered a heart attack during Wednesday’s episode.
In the episode, Carla Connor told Gail’s son David and his partner Shona that she had made an offer on their house. A heated argument broke out between Jesse Chadwick and Gail’s daughter Sarah and David. Gail snapped during the row and urged her children to leave the house.
Jesse, who had recently returned to Weatherfield after a brief romance with Gail in Thailand, decided to visit her upon hearing about the challenges surrounding her granddaughter Bethany’s cosmetic surgery in Turkey.
While searching for Gail’s granddaughter Lily’s bicycle pump, Jesse was shocked by what he found. His curiosity quickly faded when he noticed Gail breathing heavily and clutching her arm. Realising she was in distress, he phoned for an ambulance.
David, Sarah, and Nick, Gail’s oldest child, arrived on the scene as Gail was taken away in the ambulance. Both David and Sarah blamed themselves for the argument that had erupted with Jesse, believing it had triggered Gail’s heart attack.
Worth announced earlier this year she would be leaving the soap after 50 years in the role of Gail, a central figure in the Platt family.
Her exit storyline was thrown into uncertainty after Sean Wilson, who played her ex-husband Martin Platt, announced his departure from the soap for "personal reasons." Wilson, who last appeared on Coronation Street six years ago, had been set to return to the show as part of Worth’s exit storyline.
When asked about a new potential storyline, an ITV spokesperson confirmed: "Sean Wilson has stepped down from filming for personal reasons." The broadcaster added that no further comments would be made, though it had previously stated that Worth’s departure would involve a "major storyline for the Platt family."
