The dark fairy tale Anora was the big winner at the Oscars in Los Angeles on Sunday night, winning Best Picture, Best Director for Sean Baker, Best Actress for Mikey Madison, Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay.

Anora, the story of a stripper (Madison) who elopes with the son of a Russian oligarch, had been nominated for six Oscars and won five - four of them for American filmmaker Baker who also produced, wrote, and edited the acclaimed comedy-drama.

During his speeches at the Dolby Theatre, Baker paid tribute to the sex workers who had taken him into their confidence to tell their stories in his work, and he also urged people to see films on the big screen.

The musical crime film Emila Pérez, which had led the nominations with 13, won in only two categories: Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña - the favourite in that category - and Best Original Song for El Mal.

Favourite Adrien Brody was named Best Actor for his performance in the post-war epic The Brutalist, 22 years after he won his first Best Actor Oscar for The Pianist.

Brody embraced his Peaky Blinders co-star and fellow Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy as he accepted the prize from the Irish actor.

In his acceptance speech, Brody spoke of "the repercussions of war and systematic oppression, and of antisemitism and racism".

The Brutalist also won the Oscars for Original Score (Daniel Blumberg) and Cinematography (Lol Crawley). It had received 10 Oscar nominations.

As expected, Kieran Culkin was named Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the comedy-drama A Real Pain - the first award presented at the ceremony on Sunday night.

Conclave's Lisburn-born editor Nick Emerson missed out on the Editing Oscar for his work on the papal thriller, with the award going to Anora's writer-director Baker. Nominated in eight categories, Conclave's sole win was Best Adapted Screenplay for screenwriter Peter Straughan's script of the Robert Harris bestseller.

Oscars history made on the night included Anora's writer-director-producer-editor Sean Baker winning four Academy Awards for the same film, Zoe Saldaña becoming the first person of Dominican heritage to win an Oscar; Brazil's first International Feature Film win for I'm Still Here, Latvia's first Oscar for the animated film Flow, and Wicked costume designer Paul Tazewell becoming the first black man to win in the Costume Design category.

The Palestinian-Israeli film No Other Land, about the disputed West Bank, won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Film, with the film's team referencing the conflict in the Middle East as they called for a lasting peace.

During the ceremony, Kill Bill star Daryl Hannah referenced the war in Ukraine, saying "Slava Ukraini", the country's salute, as she presented the Film Editing award.

Honouring the Californian firefighters, who tackled the wildfires, Oscars host Conan O'Brien brought the emergency service workers on stage, where they received a standing ovation.

O'Brien hailed these special guests as "heroes" and invited them to share in the fun of the night by reading jokes from the teleprompter.

As part of the In Memoriam segment, Morgan Freeman paid tribute to his late friend and co-star Gene Hackman who was found dead last week along with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and their dog at the couple's home in New Mexico.
