Four new Irish short films to air on Virgin Media Television

Virgin Media Television will air four new original Irish short films from next week, following the Virgin Media Discovers competition.

The four movies, Night Driver, No Time Wasters, The Knife and Trasna Na Líne, were announced as the Virgin Media Discovers competition winners for 2024.

They will premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival this evening and will be available to watch afterwards on Virgin Media Play and over the coming weeks on Virgin Media One.

Night Driver, written and directed by journalist Michael Carolan and produced by Emer Durcan, recounts the story of a taxi driver struggling to support her children in Dublin city, and who begins to extort one of her passengers when she witnesses them being unfaithful in her taxi.

The short will air on Virgin Media One at 11pm on Tuesday 2 February.

In No Time Wasters, starring Peter Coonan and Gráinne Kennan, a student on the brink of homelessness in Dublin, seeks refuge with a seemingly kind couple, only to be confronted with an impossible proposition that threatens her safety and dignity.

It will air on Virgin Media One at 11pm on Wednesday 26 February.

The Knife is described as "a dark comedy that explores the shortcomings of the modern healthcare system for women of colour and the systemic racism of modern society". The short, starring Risteárd Cooper and Leah O'Rourke, will air on Virgin Media One at 11pm on Thursday 27th February.

Trasna Na Líne is a mockumentary comedy following student teacher Emma, who through a white lie, finds herself working at a Dublin Gaelscoil without a word of Irish. It will air at 10pm Monday 10 March on Virgin Media One.

Sinéad Stimpfig, Head of Commissioning and Acquisitions at Virgin Media Television said: "Recent international success has highlighted the amazing talent we have in this country.

"The Virgin Media Discovers winners are the next generation of this talent. It’s so important that we continue to untap this potential and in partnership with Screen Ireland, we are delighted to bring the four winning projects to the big screen at DIFF, and to national television over the coming weeks."
