EastEnders icon killed off in dramatic live episode

Denise Fox finally made her choice between her husband and lover in tonight's live EastEnders episode, while an iconic character was tragically killed off.

Warning: Spoiler Alert!

A devastating death rocks Walford

EastEnders character Martin Fowler (James Bye) died during the soap's live episode.

His death came as a large metal beam, which fell on him in the explosion at the Queen Vic pub on Wednesday’s episode, was lifted off him by the emergency services.

Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), whom Martin had just successfully proposed to, had kissed him before the beam was lifted, telling him "it’s going to be alright".

Martin appeared to be safe but moments later went into cardiac arrest, with paramedics unable to save him, having earlier warned Stacey her fiance may have crushed syndrome, causing kidney failure and heart failure.

Martin’s father Arthur, played by Bill Treacher, appeared in the first scene of the first EastEnders episode in February 1985.

Speaking about his exit, Bye said: "Saying goodbye is not easy, but after 10 years at EastEnders and on the night of the show's epic 40th anniversary – the time felt right.

"It’s an honour to leave on a story of this magnitude. A huge thank you to all the fans of the show, EastEnders wouldn’t be what it is without you, and to the BBC and EastEnders team for trusting me with this role for so many years.

"This fruit and veg man will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s time to look forward, and I’m incredibly excited for what the future holds. RIP Martin Fowler."

Denise finally makes a choice

In Thursday night's live episode of the BBC soap, Denise could be seen entering Jack’s house while secret lover Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara), the viewers’ other option in the poll, watched on disappointed.

After entering Jack’s home, she told him: "I feel safe with you Jack, I want to feel safe", and kissed him.

Denise and Jack’s tumultuous marriage fell apart last year when it was revealed he had been having an affair with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner).

Since they parted, the pair have given into their passion a few times and also shared warm moments with their blended family, but Denise has also secretly been seeing former flame Ravi since a romantic encounter on Christmas Day.

Sonia names her baby girl Julia

Sonia gave birth in the rubble of the Queen Vic following an explosion with the help of half-sister Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer) and Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa).

The baby began to turn blue and Sonia was seen struggling in the aftermath before the baby began to cry as emergency services arrived to rescue them.

Sitting in the back of an ambulance, Sonia told her baby: "So welcome to the world Julia, it's all about to begin."

Viewers also had the choice to name the baby Toni, paying homage to EastEnders’ creators Julia Smith and Tony Holland.
