What's on? Top 10 TV and streaming tips for Thursday

Robert De Niro stars as a former US president in Zero Day, there's the story of renowned artist Brian Maguire, a live episode of EastEnders, a new season of Reacher, and Shamrock Rovers continue their European adventure . . .

Pick of the Day

Zero Day, Netflix

Having an acting icon such as Robert De Niro heading the cast in this drama makes it a must-see show.

I'm delighted to confirm that's he absolutely engrossing here as former US President George Mullen, who begins the six-part series enjoying his retirement in upstate New York.

And there's a lot more going on in this highly addictive rollercoaster ride, with a superb cast that includes Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, Connie Britton and a rather spooky Clark Gregg.

De Niro’s Mullen gets coaxed out of political retirement when the US is hit by a deadly cyber-attack from an unknown source. A rapid response and resolution is essential. But how?

Zero Day asks a question that’s on many people’s mind these days - how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control?

And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?

And who killed Bambi?

Watch episode one and just try not staying for the second one.

New or Returning Shows

This is the story of renowned artist Brian Maguire, who uses his work to tell the stories of those who have fallen by the wayside and reflect the injustices of the real world.

The film follows Maguire as he spends time on the US/Mexican border giving workshops to migrants fleeing drug violence.

He’s also finding the locations in the Arizona desert where undocumented migrants have died from dehydration and starvation.

He then processes these experiences in his studios in Dublin and Paris.

New to Stream

Reacher, Prime Video

Based on Lee Child’s novel Persuader, in the third season of the action-packed series, Alan Ritchson returns as Jack Reacher.

This time around, Reacher hurtles into the dark heart of a vast criminal enterprise when trying to rescue an undercover DEA informant whose time is running out.

There he finds a world of secrecy and violence - and confronts some unfinished business from his own past.

Don’t Miss

The much-loved soap goes live once again - this time as part of the show’s 40th anniversary week.

This episode sees Walford's residents fight to save their friends and neighbours inside the Vic. Meanwhile, Denise takes a big step.

More romance in the restaurant with Mateo (below, second left) and co.

Retired electrician Billy (77) from Dublin’s Crumlin is back on the dating scene after 45 years and meets former biscuit factory worker Maureen from Usher's Quay in Dublin city centre.

Meanwhile, astrophysics graduate Cillian and his confident best friend Hansun return to the restaurant from Drogheda for a double date.

They're paired up with physiotherapist Carl from Wexford and art student Mark - but in a rare display of rogue matchmaking, the returning daters decide to swap partners halfway through the evening.

The Dog House, 8.00pm, Channel 4

Tonight’s show features a family of three dogs who are split up to increase their chances of finding permanent homes, but nervous Annie sticks close to her more confident sister Ruby.

Vocal cockapoo Darcy may find her hero in 11-year-old Luke, and Teddy the chow chow meets Woodgreen's Miss Lady Chow.

The Apprentice, 9.00pm, BBC One

This time around it's tomatoes versus potatoes as the teams are tasked with turning crops into cash.

They have to create a dish for the public, deliver a bespoke corporate order and sell to trade.

In the kitchen, one side's over-promising leaves them in a pickle, while on the other some dicey decisions cause profits to plummet.

Karren Brady and Tim Campbell monitor progress out in the field, while back in the boardroom one candidate comes a cropper and is sent home.

Cuckoo: A Celebration of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy - Omnibus, 10.40pm, BBC Four

Here's another piece of telly magic from the massive vaults at the BBC.

This documentary from 1974 takes an in-depth look at the early film comedy team of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, arguably the greatest comic duo in film history.

Followed at 11.45pm by Stan & Ollie, the excellent biopic of Laurel and Hardy, starring Steve Coogan and John C Reilly as the comedy greats.

Enchanted April, 9.00pm, BBC Four

Here’s an Oscar-nominated, Golden Globe-winning period drama treat from 1992.

Mike Newell's witty adaptation of the novel by Elizabeth Von Arnim, starring Miranda Richardson, Joan Plowright, Josie Lawrence, Polly Walker and Alfred Molina.

It’s about four women, driven to desperation in 1920s London, who rent a small castle in Italy for a holiday. The magic of the place soon begins to work in unexpected ways.

Sport

Live UECL: Shamrock Rovers v Molde, 7.15pm, Premier Sport 1

Can Shamrock Rovers make it to the last 16 of the Europa Conference League?

You would’ve been laughed at for suggesting as much when the Hoops started their current European campaign last summer – but here we are.

Thanks to a goal from 16-year-old debutant Michael Noonan (above), Rovers won last week’s first leg in Norway. They’re halfway there, but that 1-0 lead is slender and Molde remain favourites to go through.

It should be raucous evening in Tallaght Stadium as Rovers mark their first home game of 2025 with a place in history already guaranteed – but boss Stephen Bradley will be aiming to continue this groundbreaking run.
