Over the past five months, they have played in venues such as Fibber Magees, The Sound House, and Workmans Club, alongside bands such as Bullpen, Croíthe and Theta, and will be hitting the road this summer for a mini Irish tour.
Tell us three things about yourself….
I am the guitarist for Sudden Impact. Music has always been in the family, with many of us being performers, so I have always been accustomed to it. My dad is a bassist and has been playing in bands all his life, and I followed in his footsteps, picking up the guitar at eight years old. I began actively listening and learning from guitarists such as Brian May and Eric Clapton, trying my best to replicate their playing, and it soon became an obsession. I am 18 years old, from Walkinstown in Dublin, studying sound engineering at Ballyfermot College of Further Education.
How would you describe your music?
I would describe our music as alternative, exciting, and never boring. We are not afraid to step outside our comfort zone and write in multiple genres, creating a very eclectic setlist. Each member of the band has different tastes and influences, creating unique, dissonant, and exciting compositions. Our new single screams attitude and always keeps the listener on their toes.
Who are your musical inspirations?
My all-time favourite band is Queen, with my favourite album being Queen II. I fell in love with their music very quickly and they are no doubt a part of my everyday life. I am so inspired by Brian May's ability to write such moving and inspiring solos while still being so concise and never overstaying his welcome in a given track. I am hypnotized by Freddie’s presence on stage and how he encapsulated every person in the audience. Another inspiration of mine is Gary Moore. The emotion he displays in his playing is so genuine, and this is something that I take into consideration in every one of my compositions.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Queen and Adam Lambert - Live at The SSE Arena, Belfast. This is the first gig I remember attending. It had such an impact on me and sparked the idea for me and my sister (Eve Martyn) to form Sudden Impact. From the production to the performance, it was perfect.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin.
Favourite song right now?
Journey - Little Girl.
Favourite lyric of all time?
My favourite lyric comes from the song Dust in the Wind by Kansas: "Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky. It slips away, all your money won’t another minute buy. Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind."
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Queen - The March Of The Black Queen.
