The veteran actor Jimmy Martin, who was best known for playing Eric in the BBC Scotland sitcom Still Game, has died aged 93, the show's director Michael Hines has confirmed.

Martin appeared in 47 episodes of the sitcom, which follows pensioners Jack (Ford Kiernan) and Victor (Greg Hemphill) as they end up on a number of misadventures while reminiscing about their youth and chatting about the present day.

Announcing Martin's death, Hines posted on X: "Just to let all the Still Game fans out there [know] that Jimmy Martin 'Eric' passed away today.

"He was a wonderful actor and I was honoured to call him pal."

The director told the PA news agency the Scottish actor had lived an "amazing life full of mad adventures".

Martin appeared in the show from 2002 to 2018, but his character, who was regularly seen drinking in The Clansman pub with Jack and Victor, was killed off in series eight.

His acting career began in the 1980s with roles in Taggart and Take the High Road, and he went on to appear in the BBC comedy Rab C Nesbitt and the Netflix comedy Lovesick.

Born in Glasgow's Partick area, before spending a large part of his life living in Musselburgh, East Lothian, Martin joined the Royal Navy at 17.

He spent 16 years in the fire brigade before starting his acting career.

Also announcing the news of Martin's death, the management agency Red Dog Entertainment said: "We are deeply saddened to share the news that Jimmy Martin, the beloved actor known for playing Eric in Still Game, has passed away.

"His warmth, humour, and unforgettable performances brought joy to so many, and his legacy will live on through the laughter he shared with the world.

"Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who loved him. Rest in peace, Jimmy."
