John Connors says he 'only confirmed' his Love/Hate character return

Actor John Connors has addressed the recent comments he made about Love/Hate returning, saying, "I only confirmed myself coming back so far."

It made stars of its cast, including Robert Sheehan, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Ruth Negga, Killian Scott, Charlie Murphy, Peter Coonan and Aidan Gillen, and is considered one of the greatest Irish television dramas of all time.

Connors played traveller Patrick Ward, who kills crime boss Nidge in the show's final episode.

In a recent interview, the actor claimed Love/Hate was set to make a return but he has now clarified his comments, saying he only confirmed his character would return.

Connors appeared on Virgin Media's Six O'Clock Show last Thursday and told hosts Brian Dowling and Katja Mia that Love/Hate would be back on screens next year.

A source close to Netflix also denied that any deal had been made to produce new episodes of Love/Hate.

Speaking to Dave Moore on Today FM on Wednesday, Connors said: "I only confirmed myself coming back so far," adding that the project is "at a very good stage".

"All I confirmed is that Patrick Ward is coming back - I'm coming back for sure - and I'm a writer on the show. Stuart has honoured me by asking me to write the show with him, and I'm the executive producer. It's the best writing I've ever encountered."

RTÉ recently said there are "no plans" for a new series of Love/Hate

When asked if there's a chance that the upcoming show could be a new Irish crime drama with Patrick Ward and not Love/Hate 2, Connors remained vague, adding: "We're at a very good stage with the project now and I'm so excited. It's going to be a huge scale - even in comparison to the original and a bigger production.

Connors said he is a writer and executive producer on the new project which will be on screens next year.

"Myself and Stuart became very good friends over the years. I've learned a lot from him, he's been a great mentor and friend to me. We always wanted to work together again.

"There was a day when I was getting snapped every second minute by someone [over Love/Hate]. This was a couple of years ago. Stuart couldn't believe that the show still had legs and I said he should consider bringing it back - and that kind of struck a nerve with Stuart," he said.

Addressing his appearance on Virgin Media's Six O'Clock Show, he said: "Now the other day, I thought that the show that I was on - on Virgin - I thought that they had got a scent of this and that this was happening. There was supposed to be a press release coming, and I kind of spoiled the whole thing. Now, the press release isn't coming.

"This is kind of what I do. I'm an impulsive person. Also, I thought it would be fun to surprise them - so I did surprise people," he laughed.
