DWTS's Gearóid Farrelly: 'I'm starting to feel a little bit more comfortable'

Dancing with the Stars contestant Gearóid Farrelly has said he is "kind of impressed" with his progress on the dancing competition and said his confidence is growing as the weeks pass.

The comedian, podcaster, and TV personality has hugely impressed the judges and audience at home with his powerhouse performances alongside his professional partner Stephen Vincent.

Last Sunday, they performed a Paso Doble to Holding Out For a Hero by Bonnie Tyler in honour of Farrell's parents, Eamon and Deirdre.

"They loved it, they absolutely loved it," he said. "My parents are very private. Even when I did The Late Late Show my mam said 'I couldn't sit in the audience I'd just be too mortified'.

"So the idea of her filming a VT (a pre-filmed segment), I was like, this is unreal! I never thought she would do this. I broached it so tentatively with them. I was like 'Would you up for doing it, you don't have to if you don't want to!' And they said 'Of course!'

"I'd love to think that was about me, but I think it's more about Dancing with the Stars because my mam is the biggest Dancing with the Stars anorak.

"The first thing she said to me when I said I was doing it was 'Now that's my favourite programme'. It was very much - 'You're messing in territory that I'm not comfortable with'.

"But they loved it and they loved the Holding Out For a Hero story, because they had forgotten about it. It was when they wouldn't let the guy turn off the jukebox when we were on holidays because I put it on 20 times!"

He added: "It was a really nice moment. For me I was like, 'Oh God, I just want to get this dance right', I didn't really thing about the dedication element, but they really went for that so I was happy."

The comedian, who is self-deprecating about his dancing abilities despite ample evidence to the contrary, said he is starting to feel more at ease as the competition progresses.

"I'm starting to feel a little bit more comfortable, we're coming into week five now", he said. "I'm really not a natural dancer, I'm so self conscious at dancing.

"I went to a wedding two weeks before we started rehearsals for Dancing with the Stars and I didn't get on the dancefloor, I was too self conscious!

"So I'm kind of impressed with myself."

Farrelly thought that being a comedian and accustomed to being onstage would help ease his nerves on the dancefloor. That hasn't been the case.

"It's so strange to feel the nerves again and to feel like a baby in something," he shared.

"But I'm loving every second of it, it's by far the best experience I think I've ever had. I've never experienced anything like it, it's incredible."
