Behind the music - BE N!CE

London-based punk band BE N!CE have released their debut EP Where Am I?. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

Produced at Big Fig Studio in Buckinghamshire by Jake Stanton and mastered by Arran Dutt, the new release compiles most of the band's 2024 singles and includes new track, Get A Job.

Lead vocalist Pol Mills says, "This EP means a lot to us, we're very proud of it. I feel like it symbolises who we are as a band. We’re angry and upset about a lot of things but also don’t like taking ourselves too seriously. The world’s falling apart, may as well have fun with it. It’s the only way of keeping ourselves sane."

The band will launch the EP with a gig at the Hope & Anchor in London on 1 February.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

We all live in London but only Pol is originally from the capital. Alex is from Manchester; Emily is from Buckinghamshire and Brett was born in the UK but grew up near Bordeaux in France.

Emily and Brett started the band after meeting through joinmyband.co.uk and, being Emily’s roommate, Alex was asked if he wanted to play drums. Brett met Pol at the Electrowerkz venue in London and two weeks later they joined the rest for a rehearsal session. The rest is history.

The first gig we all went to together was Finnish power metal band Battle Beast. Brett’s the only one who’s an active fan, the rest of us just like to be included.

How would you describe your music?

Our music is punk above all else. We like to experiment with each song by taking inspiration from different alternative genres such as post-punk, hardcore, alt-metal and grunge. The absurdist theme of our upcoming debut EP Where Am I? is fairly representative of where we are now as a band. We like to walk a fine line between being a bit silly and a bit shocking. Our songs tend to be pretty raw and honest; we wear our feelings and emotions on our sleeves, especially when those emotions are being tired all the goddamn time. If you like loud, energetic, angry, cathartic music, we might be for you!

Who are your musical inspirations?

Each person in the band brings their own taste in music and inspirations to the table which ends up being quite large given the range of music we all like. We originally bonded over bands like Amyl and The Sniffers and The Chats but recently have been taking more inspiration from post punk and hardcore/metal. The artists that come up the most for us are the two previously mentioned as well as Hole, Chat Pile, Death Grips, black midi, System of a Down, Rage Against The Machine, Witch Fever, Swans, Queens of the Stone Age, Petrol Girls, GEL, Babes In Toyland and Viagra Boys.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Pol: 5 Seconds of Summer at the Capital FM Jingle Bell Ball in 2014, they were truthfully the only thing that mattered to me at the time.

Alex: The Black Keys at the AO Arena in Manchester. I was 13 and it was brilliant!

Emily: Feral State at Duffy’s in Leicester.

Brett: Deep Purple in Bordeaux in 2011.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Pol: 5SOS self-titled album on the day it was released.

Alex: Green Day’s American Idiot for my 13th birthday.

Emily: Paradise by Coldplay.

Brett: I can’t remember the first I bought, but the first I owned was Queen’s Greatest Hits II.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Pol: NISSAN ALTIMA - Doechii.

Alex: Wooden Girl - jonatan leandoer96.

Emily: Song Against Sex - Neutral Milk Hotel.

Brett: An Ocean Of Strange Islands - Nightwish.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Pol: "They won’t take no for an answer, As if they ever f***ing asked, Yeah we incite this violence, Nothing ever changed in silence" - Sour by Witch Fever.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Pol: Hiccup - Sorry Mom.

Alex: A Day In The Life - The Beatles.

Emily: She Loves Us - Swans.

Brett: One - Metallica.
