What's on? Top 10 TV and streaming tips for Wednesday

Steve Coogan stars as a TV presenter (not Alan Patridge!) in Brian and Maggie, Idris Elba looks at knife crime in the UK, Neven Maguire continues his Portuguese journey, and it's a big night in the Champions League . . .

Pick of the Day

Brian and Maggie, 9.00pm, Channel 4

Steve Coogan's coming to Bord Gáis Energy Theatre to star in Dr Strangelove, but here he plays a real-life character in James Graham's new period drama.

It's a recreation of Margaret Thatcher's final British TV interview with journalist Brian Walden (Coogan) from which their friendship never recovered.

After resigning as a Labour MP, Brian Walden is poached by London Weekend Television to front a heavyweight political programme dedicated to the longform interview.

He forms an unlikely friendship with his first guest, Conservative Party leader Margaret Thatcher, played here by Harriet Walker.

Then in 1989, when Brian Walden and then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher met for their last ever TV interview, little did they know it would become such a famous political exchange.

The 45-minute showdown became a national talking point in the UK and helped set in train a series of events that ended with Thatcher's resignation. They never spoke to each other again.

New or Returning Shows

Idris Elba: Our Knife Crime Crisis, 9.00pm, BBC One

Knife crime is a major issue in the UK, particularly in London.

Idris Elba confronts the reality of knife crime, speaking to victims, offenders, police and grieving families, in a quest to uncover how the cycle can be broken.

The actor speaks to King Charles - I hear he’s handy with a Stanley - and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer about possible solutions, advocating for earlier interventions and highlighting successful initiatives that have had a positive impact.

Murder Trial: Girl in the River, 9.00pm, BBC Two

This two-parter looks at the murder of Scottish schoolgirl Caroline Glachan (below) in August 1996.

The original police investigation was hampered by an unwillingness to cooperate with the police and only re-opened in 2019.

Three suspects stood accused of killing the 14-year-old, who was found face down in the River Leven, Dunbartonshire, having been violently assaulted.

Shocking revelations unfolded in court as Caroline's family sought justice in one of Scotland's most haunting cold cases.

Featuring interviews with Caroline's mother, DCI Stuart Grainger the SIO on the case, the mother of key witness 'Archie' and the victim's friends

Neven also tries traditional recipes with a modern twist, created by chef Nelson Rolo.

The Repair Shop, 8.00pm, BBC One

More physical memories get a magical makeover for their owners.

Experts restore a rugby shirt worn by a professional Welsh player in the 1960s that has suffered a laundry catastrophe, a 45-year-old serving plate that has passed through generations, a map of Wharfedale used by an RSPCA inspector and an accordion from the 1940s.

Babs, 10.00pm, BBC Four

Here’s another chance to see this 2017 biopic of the late Barbara Windsor, following the key events of the actress's life over the course of 50 years.

The story begins in 1993, with Windsor preparing for a stage performance shortly before joining the cast of BBC soap EastEnders.

She looks back to her childhood as a lonely evacuee in the Second World War, her rise to fame in the Carry On films and her difficult relationships with her father and her first husband, gangster Ronnie Knight.

Samantha Spiro, Jaime Winstone, Honor Kneafsey and Windsor herself share the lead role.

Alison Hammond's Florida Unpacked, 6.30pm, BBC Two

As their adventure continues, Alison and Aidan Hammond (below) visit a theme park with an 1980s' feel and dive headfirst into the affordable fun, with a roller coaster ride for half the price of the big parks.

Then, the pair stop off at a family-run popcorn shop, where they taste-test buffalo hot, bacon and cheese, and wasabi flavours.

Alison and Aidan also take part in a dining experience straight out of the Middle Ages, where they get hands-on with horse grooming and learn some knightly stunts.

American Manhunt: OJ Simpson, Netflix

In 1995, former NFL icon and then actor OJ Simpson went on trial for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Thirty years later, director Floyd Russ reexamines one of the most-discussed true-crime stories in this four-part docuseries.

"This is a story that has so many faces and so many elements that when you contextualize it historically it takes on a new form every few years," Russ says.

The series features new interviews with many of the key figures from the investigation and trial, including Ronald Goldman’s sister Kim.

Tonight sees the final round of games in the new league phase of the Champions League, so it’s a busy oul’ night as clubs battle for places in the last 16 and the play-off round.

City (above) need a win to qualify for the play-off round, while a point would be enough for Brugge - and they could even go through with a loss if other results go in their favour.

In Live UEFA Champions League (7.30pm, Virgin Media Two), it’s PSV Eindhoven v Liverpool (KO 8pm) at Philips Stadion. Liverpool are already through to the last 16, while PSV are guaranteed a play-off place, so there’s zero jeopardy here.

If it’s highlights and a broader look at the competition you're looking for, there’s UEFA Champions League MOTD (10.40pm, BBC One), where you can see a round-up of all the night’s action.
