Climate activists fire confetti cannon at Sigourney Weaver London play

Two climate activists disrupted a London stage performance of William Shakespeare's 'The Tempest', starring Sigourney Weaver.

The protesters climbed onto the stage at London's Theatre Royal yesterday evening, launching a confetti cannon and holding a sign which read "Over 1.5 Degrees is a Global Shipwreck".

The message refers to the recent announcement that 2024 was the first full year over the 1.5 degree global temperature rise limit, beyond which scientists warn stability of life is under threat.

Ms Weaver, who had been sitting on a chair, was escorted off stage, while the two protesters faced boos and a few cheers from the audience.

In a statement, Just Stop oil named one activist as Hayley Walsh, a 42-year-old lecturer from Nottingham in central England.

The audience greeted the protesters with boos and whistles

"I am scared for my children, I can't sleepwalk them into a future of food shortages, life-threatening storms and wars for resources," she said.

The second protestor was Richard Weir, 60, a mechanical engineer, added the statement.

Mr Weir from Tynemouth, North Tyneside, said: "I started my career in the shipyards of Tyneside and I watched management inaction lead to the collapse of UK manufacturing.

"Now I see similar failures of leadership as politicians refuse to take action to protect us and our loved ones.

"We're already seeing the damage this crisis is doing to crops, homes and entire neighbourhoods. Unless we come together and demand a move away from fossil fuels by 2030, we will go the same way as manufacturing in the UK."

Ms Weaver, 75, plays the magician Prospero in the play, which opened on 19 December.

Police later said that a 42-year-woman and a 60-year-old man were arrested in connection with the incident.
