Jennifer Lopez's latest film, Kiss of the Spider Woman, received a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday.
Directed by Bill Condon, the movie blends 1950s Hollywood musical glamour with a gritty prison drama set during Argentina's 1970s military dictatorship.
The film follows two cellmates, Valentin, a political prisoner played by Diego Luna, and Molina, an LGBTQ convict portrayed by Tonatiuh, who form a surprising bond. Lopez stars as Ingrid Luna, a glamorous diva featured in vivid musical flashbacks that intertwine with the prison narrative.
"It's about how love can cure any divide," Lopez told AFP, adding that the story's themes of unity and acceptance feel particularly timely.
Condon, best known for Dreamgirls and Chicago, praised Lopez as "the only person who could play this part", crediting her involvement with securing the film's financing.
Like most Sundance films, Kiss of the Spider Woman is currently seeking distribution.
