Actor Don Gilet can be seen investigating a murder as the new detective inspector of Saint Marie in the first trailer for series 14 of Death in Paradise.
Gilet, known for his role as the villainous Lucas Johnson in the soap EastEnders as well as starring in Sherwood, was first seen in the role during a Christmas special.
His character, DI Mervin Wilson, is ready to leave the island for good when a case close to the hearts of those at the station presents itself.
In the trailer, Mervin, who previously discovered his estranged mother had died, says he does not think her death was "an accident".
He is also heard saying, "...of all the elaborate ways to murder someone" and writes on a board that appears to show suspects and witnesses to a crime.
Tobi Bakare reprises his role as Sergeant JP Hooper, with Don Warrington playing Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, and Élizabeth Bourgine playing Catherine Bordey.
Gilet appeared in Death in Paradise as a guest star in series four, playing a different character.
My Family actor Kris Marshall, who stars in the spin-off show Beyond Paradise; Johnny English actor Ben Miller, Father Ted star Ardal O'Hanlon, and The Royle Family actor Ralf Little have also played the DI lead role.
The series is filmed on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe.
Death in Paradise will return to BBC One on Friday 31 January at 9pm.
