Behind the music - Slightly Dishevelled

Irish five-piece noise act Slightly Dishevelled have released their new single, Lament, from their upcoming album, Dirty Dishes and the West Wing. We asked the band's vocalist Fiachra Carey the BIG questions . . .

The band’s music is a combination of influences, ranging from 70s punk to psychedelia, and from improvisation to noise music. They recorded their new album, which is released on 21 February, in an Achill Island studio last year.

The group recently starred in short film Gan Ainm (35mm) by Dublin artist Roisin Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh, which was shown in private screenings around Dublin.

In 2023 they scored Molasses pt. ii, a film by Cork artist Saoirse McGarry. The completely improvised piece was recorded in one 20-minute take in the Achill Island Studio. The film piece was nominated for the RDS visual arts prize and can be experienced in an exhibition in IMMA this March.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I haven't gone to the barbers in around 10 years, always DIY job. I went to BIMM Dublin and will forever try to unlearn that experience. Despite working full time, I really can't afford to make music, however, it's the main thing keeping me going.

How would you describe your music?

]

Slightly Dishevelled’s music to me is naive and hard to grasp, but honest and very real. Down and out and nowhere to go.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Amyl and the Sniffers, The Fall, Viagra Boys. Kneecap, Shane MacGowan, Tom Waits. Pharaoh Sanders, Charles Mingus, Sun Ra, to name a few.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Probably Jedward in Limerick in 2010. I spent an hour using my mam’s hairspray and hairdryer to spike up the hair.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Tom Waits - The Heart of Saturday Night. At around 17, I read Jack Kerouac's On The Road and found out the album was actually inspired by Kerouac. So, I stole my sister’s dusty broken record player and bought the vinyl.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Junco Partner by James Booker.

Favourite lyric of all time?

I'm a Lover Not a Fighter. I love the Lazy Lester version.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Paddy Rolling Stone – From The Crock of Gold by Shane MacGowan.

Slightly Dishevelled: crazy name, crazy guys!
