Tamsin Greig and Rosalie Craig become punk rockers in first look at new drama

Actresses Tamsin Greig and Rosalie Craig have transformed into punk rockers in the first look pictures of Sally Wainwright's new drama.

Riot Women will see Friday Night Dinner star Greig and musical theatre actress Craig unite with After Love actress Joanna Scanlan, Sherwood’s Lorraine Ashbourne and Scott & Bailey actress Amelia Bullmore to play middle-aged women who form a new punk rock band.

The upcoming six-part series will follow the five women coping with work, grown-up children, dependent parents, husbands and the menopause.

Greig, Craig and Bullmore - who play Holly, Kitty and Yvonne - can be seen dressed in denim jackets, tartan suits and tasselled tops as they rock out on stage in a newly released photo from the drama.

Craig can also be seen causing chaos as she stands wielding a hammer on top of a sports car which has been spraypainted.

Another picture shows Ashbourne, who plays Jess, sporting a spiked hairdo and dressed in a sparkly jacket with white stars as she plays the drums on stage.

Happy Valley creator Wainwright, who serves as creator, writer, director and executive producer, said: "I’m having a whole new buzz of excitement about the show as we bring it together in the edit, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone."

The series follows the five women who come together to create a makeshift punk-rock band in order to enter a local talent contest but, in writing their first original song, they discover that they have a lot to say.

As they juggle the demands of life, the band becomes a catalyst for change in their lives and makes them question everything.

Kitty and Beth (Scanlan), who play the band’s creative masterminds, will also be caught up in a long-buried secret during the show, set in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.

Line Of Duty actress star Taj Atwal, Holby City’s Chandeep Uppal and Shadow And Bone actress Macy Jacob-Seelochan also feature in the drama as Nisha, Kam and Miranda, the band’s riotous backing singers.

Also among the cast is Anne Reid, who worked with Wainwright on Last Tango In Halifax, as Holly and Yvonne’s mother, and The Royle Family actress Sue Johnston as Jess’s aunt.

Doctor Who actor Peter Davison; Outnumbered actress Claire Skinner; Merlin star Angel Coulby; Happy Valley actor Amit Shah and Hollyoaks actor Tony Hirst have also joined the show.

It features original songs from the band ARXX who entered the UK charts with the 2023 single Ride Or Die.

Riot Women will premiere on BBC One in the UK later this year.
